Barnsley Council Mobile Bike Workshop
Barnsley Council is the local authority serving the borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The council delivers a wide range of services including community development, environmental services, public health initiatives and active travel programmes.
As part of its commitment to improving health and wellbeing across the region, the council supports initiatives that encourage residents to take part in cycling and other forms of physical activity.
The Challenge
Barnsley Council required a specialised, bespoke vehicle conversion that could support community cycling initiatives, helping to promote cycling while also providing practical support to residents.
The vehicle needed to act as both a mobile bike maintenance workshop and a transport solution for bicycles, allowing the council to run outreach activities, attend community events and deliver free bike repair sessions across the borough.
To ensure the vehicle met the needs of the programme, the design needed to be developed collaboratively with the council’s fleet team and the cycle scheme project manager.
What We Did
MIS Conversions worked closely with Barnsley Council during a consultation and design phase to develop a fully bespoke vehicle conversion tailored to the project’s objectives.
The vehicle was fitted with a custom-built body designed specifically for bike maintenance and transportation, incorporating several specialist features, including:
- Opening side panels to create an accessible workshop space
- A hydraulic retractable roof to allow safe and convenient loading and unloading of bicycles
- A dedicated bike maintenance and storage area designed to support repairs and servicing
The layout allows council teams to operate the vehicle as a mobile workshop, enabling them to engage directly with communities and support cycling initiatives across the region.
The Result
The result is a fully bespoke mobile bike workshop designed to encourage cycling and support active travel across Barnsley.
The vehicle provides a flexible platform for community engagement, allowing the council to deliver free bike repair workshops, attend events and promote healthier lifestyles throughout the borough.
